WWE news: Five potential Roman Reigns replacements to face Goldberg at WrestleMania 36

Roman Reigns has refused to compete at WrestleMania

WrestleMania plans were thrown into turmoil late last night when WWE's biggest full-time star refused to compete at the event.

Roman Reigns was due to face Goldberg for the Universal Championship at WWE's flagship event, which is being held behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But owing to his own health issues, which have been well publicised after he was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2018, Reigns pulled out of his commitments to performing.

You can't blame The Big Dog for his decision - after all his health comes first - and it comes at a time where fellow superstars Rey Mysterio and Dana Brooke are reportedly in quarantine because of COVID-19.

All this means that a new opponent is needed to face Goldberg at the WWE Performance Center, and there are actually quite a few legitimate contenders on the SmackDown side of things - so let's have a look at some options.

Braun Strowman

Braun Strowman could be one of the alternatives to Roman Reigns

The Monster Among Men has been given the run-around in recent weeks by Sami Zayn and his cronies, which led to him losing the Intercontinental Championship.

But what better way to build him back up to being a monster by taking out Goldberg?

Strowman has never held a world title before, but this could be the time to make him look a serious threat once again.

Sheamus has only been squashing lower-level superstars since his return

Since he returned to the ring a couple of months ago, The Celtic Warrior has been squashing the likes of Apollo Crews and Shorty G multiple times.

Now is really the time for him to move on from such matches, and taking on Goldberg would be a very intriguing match-up.

It's never happened before and Sheamus has been portrayed as unstoppable during his comeback - and he could credibly take out the champion.

Jeff Hardy

Many WWE fans would like to see another Jeff Hardy world title run

Another star that has just recently returned, every WWE fan would love another world championship victory for the Charismatic Enigma.

If it were to happen, then a match against a 50-something year old like Goldberg isn't going to be the greatest of spectacles, but it'll certainly wet the appetite somewhat.

Daniel Bryan

Daniel Bryan may be another superstar that gets ruled out of WrestleMania

Bryan v Goldberg is a match that would intrigue the WWE Universe, but Bryan himself may not even be competing at Mania this year.

It's been inferred that he will take on Sami Zayn for the Intercontinental Championship, but owing to his own autoimmune disease, DBry could be one of the stars that ends up being pulled from the show.

That would be a shame if so, but Bryan would probably be the second most popular alternative to Reigns.

Bray Wyatt

The Fiend defeating Goldberg at WrestleMania would go some way to repairing the damage of Super ShowDown last month

This would be by far the most popular choice with WWE fans, and it would see The Fiend's character redeemed for the awful decision to have it defeated at Super ShowDown.

Wyatt could defeat John Cena on night one of WrestleMania, then take on Goldberg the following evening for the title [even though all matches will be taped in advance].

And if that happens and Wyatt wins, the issue of what happened in Saudi Arabia isn't entirely fixed, but it goes some way to repairing the damage.
